The Laws of Elul - Halacha Yomit

As we all know, there is a distinction between Shaachrit and Mincha on the one hand and Maariv on

the other hand. Shaachrit and Mincha were decreed by Chazal as obligatory prayers for all Jewish men and (according to the Ramban) for all Jewish women. Maariv, on the other hand, was originally optional – only later on in Jewish history did Jewish men accept this prayer upon themselves as obligatory.

What about Jewish women, though? What has been and is today their halachic response and/or obligation vis-a-vis Maariv? Did they also accept it upon themselves as obligatory as did the men? If not, then what is their halachic obligation towards this originally optional prayer? That is the subject of today’s Halacha Yomit.
